Students do not need an email to sign up. They just need the code from the teacher. In order to be notified of updates however, students need an email or a cell phone (note: charges might apply for receiving these updates). This feature is an enhancement and is not necessary to participate in edmodo; they can check the website themselves.
Edmodo is geared more for secondary education.

Edmodo is a free online tool for both teachers and students; it serves as a place for teachers and students to collaboate outside of the classroom. With this web 2.0 tool teachers can sign up and create class groups within seconds. The look and functions of Edmodo is comparable to Facebook, a social networking site that many students are familiar with. Teachers can post assignments, links, files, podcasts, etc. to the site for students to access. Similar to a Facebook wall, users can reply to posts or post their own messages and links, and this is all threaded on the group edmodo site, thus encouraging student collaboration.
With edmodo, students can turn in their assignments and be automically notified when the assignment grade is reported. Teachers can also be automatically notified when students reply to posts, and upload links or assignments; teachers can also keep an online gradebook through edmodo.

Media specialists may promote edmodo by using their own edmodo site with students and by sharing it with teachers at a faculty meeting or at a professional development workshop.
Media specialists can use edmodo with students to share sites and resources, to post information about upcoming events at the media center, carry on book discussions, answer student questions, etc. in order to get students more involved in the media center (Standards for the 21st Century Learner: 1.1.9, 2.1.5, 3.1.2, 3.2.2).
